Vera Playa – A Jewel in the Naturist Crown

A magnificent blend of unspoilt natural beauty, stunning views and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere make Vera Playa THE must-see, feel and experience naturist destination in Spain. It’s a calm and serene oasis where blissed-out naturists lounge by the shore and bathers swim in the gentle surf while the sun does nothing but sizzle.

There is a buzz and undeniable appeal to this laid-back getaway. Maybe it’s the gorgeous beach set against the sparkling blue Mediterranean? Or perhaps it’s the long lazy days that lull you into a deep sense of relaxation? Then again it could have something to do with the fact that it’s possible to spend your entire holiday in the nude, only reuniting with your clothes when it’s time to leave.

Small wonder then, that Vera Playa is a perennial presence in numerous top ten lists of the best naturist resorts in the world.

Sun All Year Round

Vera Playa is situated in Almeria, the sunniest and driest region of Spain and basks in the sun’s rays for an average of 320 days a year. The arid and near desert-like climate make this a year-round holiday destination, a superb place to unwind, get naked and enjoy hot summers and warm winters. Even during December and January while your friends are shivering back home it’s possible to venture outside in the nude and soak up a few hours of warm winter rays.

The Capital of Bare Bathing

Without a doubt the beach is the biggest attraction, a seven kilometre stretch of fine golden sand with occasional spots of shingle, and so much space that you’ll never be lying elbow-to-elbow with sun worshipping strangers - unlike many of the other beach resorts on the Spanish costas.

The first two and half kilometre section is given over to naturism and although some textiles can be found in this part of the beach (it isn’t fenced off and there is an absence of signs) the overwhelming majority of users are naked.

Sea swimming is possible all year round. In winter the water temperature may be a little too cold for the Spanish but for northern Europeans 14-15C is more than bearable. In the summer it’s an almost bath-like warm 24C – you can walk in without flinching.

The playa naturista (naturist beach) is bordered by a wonderful promenade, has two naturist bars, Sol y Luna and Tiggers and offers superb views of the surrounding mountains. One of the most striking sights is the Sierra Cabrera mountain range, home to the picturesque hilltop village of Mojacar Pueblo, a collection of dazzling whitewashed buildings and winding cobbled streets.

Behind the naturist beach are residential urbanisations, shops, restaurants and bars, all situated within an officially recognised naturist zone where there are no compulsory clothing requirements; you are free to walk, cycle, shop and prop up the bars in the buff. And many people do, at all times of the day and night.

Private Hideaways

Naturism isn’t just confined to the official beach. Many naturists who come to the area head off to the secluded coves that dot the coastline, particularly along the coastal road that takes you from the fishing village of Villaricos to the seaside resort of San Juan de Los Terreros.

There are a plethora of private hideaways waiting to be discovered, though some are harder to get to than others and may require navigating your way down cliff paths. This is not nearly as formidable as it sounds. At others you are able to get your car quite close to the water’s edge.

To find your own isolated piece of paradise just climb into your car and drive and stop when you see one that catches your eye. Some will be officially naked, and others not, but there’s nothing to worry about here as Spain is on very good terms with the naked person. The Spanish Constitution gives the public the right to be naked anywhere in the country, provided that you respect others and do not cause offence.

Naturist Accommodation

The au natural resort’s only hotel is the Vera Playa Club Hotel. This is Spain’s first and to date only naturist hotel. Situated directly on the beach it offers an idyllic naturist environment and there’s a wonderful, cosy, village-like feel to the place. There are nearly 300 rooms that are a mixture of studios, apartments and hotel rooms, some of which are deluxe.

The hotel’s four wings encircle a huge swimming pool which is surrounded by an ample supply of sun loungers and parasols. There is also an open-air Jacuzzi and showers.

Nudity is the norm wherever you go in the hotel - apart from the restaurants - and it’s obligatory by the pool area where bathing costumes are not allowed. In the evening guests are required to dress for dinner.

Unfortunately, the hotel isn’t open in the winter. Typically it closes toward the end of October and reopens again at Easter.

Self-Catering

Other places to stay within the naturist zone include a range of private self-catering apartments in the resort’s many naturist urbanisations. These are secure gated communities with landscaped gardens, well watered lawns, exotic shrubberies and swimming pools.

The standard of apartments is generally quite high and varies little between urbanisations. They are typically one or two bedroom units with good-sized balconies, and many have sea views as they back directly onto the beach. Fully naturist urbanisations include Vera Natura, Bahia de Vera, Natsun, La Menora, Parque Vera and Torrema Natura. You can walk around and between the urbanisations without having to get dressed.

Houses and villas are also available but only a small handful of these are within the naturist zone.

Dining Out

Andalusian cuisine enjoys an unrivalled reputation for the sheer variety of its food that mirrors the area’s rich and diverse geography. However, the options at Vera Playa are limited as there are only a small smattering of bars and restaurants.

Two that stand out can be found in “Hotel Street” the road that leads up to the Vera Playa Club Hotel. They are El Balconcito, a small Spanish bar with a cute atmosphere and a great line in no-nonsense tapas, and Frankies, a welcoming and convivial British-run bar with tasty pub grub. Both are naturist-friendly which means you can wine and dine in the altogether should you so wish.

To sample some really spectacular cuisine it’s best to make your way to the restaurants in the neighbouring villages of Garrucha, Mojacar and Turre. All are a short car or cab drive away. Some of the area’s most popular eateries can be found in the fishing village of Garrucha. Its fish restaurants serve fresh catches of the day and the gamabas (prawns) are renowned throughout the region.

At Mojacar Playa the seafront is flanked by dozens of beach bars and restaurants serving a range of international cuisines including Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Mexican.

Get the Party Started

When the sun goes down Vera Playa doesn’t exactly pulsate to heady and eclectic beats, in fact there isn’t a single nightclub here. If you want to get down and dirty on the dance floor you’ll have to put your clothes back on and make your way to the nearest clubs which are Mandela and Maui Beach Bar, both in the neighbouring resort of Mojacar Playa (a 20 minute cab ride away).

Mandela is the playa’s party animal, a favourite with the beautiful young things who like to see and be seen. The sumptuous bar serves exotic cocktails, and techno and house beats thump their way through a sound system that will shake and rattle your soul to its core. VIP rooms and themed nights add to the sensational and exhilarating mix.

A few hundred metres up the road from Mandela is Maui which is located right on a sandy beach. During the day it serves soft drinks and cocktails and a crowd-pleasing menu of seafood, pizza and pasta dishes. But at night, it’s all change as the party vibes take over, enticing some of the hottest international DJs to entertain the intense and energetic crowds.

A Fantastic Nude Vacation

When the party’s over it’s time to get back in touch with life and your unique clothes-free holiday experience. Though often referred to as a resort Vera Playa is not a holiday destination tucked away behind fences or hidden from the rest of civilization in a controlled zone. It’s a completely open naturist paradise that is accessible to all.

So chill-out on sun-drenched sands and enjoy some glorious nude fun in the sun that will refresh, rejuvenate and liberate your mind, body and soul.
